Biases in business people. A perspective on influence-manipulative techniques on followers /

Social proof
“The more people who approve something or someone, the more likely we are to like it, too. Wether it is likes on social media or followers."

DISCLAIMER: I am writing about this topic with an objective and fact based perspective. I have been researching about human behavior and neuroscience since 7 years ago. Studied also about Neuromarketing since 4 years ago. I also hold a Bachelor's degree in Marketing. Everything that will be shared it is based on studies and theories that I’ve researched along those years. This analysis is not generalizing all segments, just for those who too evident and analyzable.

First of all, let’s define the meaning of Bias…

  1. “Cause to feel or show inclination or prejudice for or against someone or something.”
  2. “Prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be different from their ideology.”

Psychology explains us that biases are divided in 3 categories, those would be: Confirmation bias, sampling bias, and brilliance bias. Those three are examples of how something can affect our ability to critically engage with information or see reality of people due to a distorted perspective. For a better understanding, being biased to someone or something denies and ignores what contradicts their perspective. This introduces us to a confirmation bias, which can lead us to make bad or attacking choices or even reinforce negative stereotypes towards someone who isn’t biased.

Now… let’s discuss how this affects when people are biased by social media personalities and their social position and are guided to purchase without being conscious.

There are lots of social media “personalities” (most of them are just known in one platform, out of there they are normal people). Such people have around 20k until 300k followers, and the way they interact with others is the SAME. All of the accounts researched were selling something (not bad, we all have a right to sell, but most of their ways aren't honest), rather their strategy is really interesting. Some of them use fake charisma and treat their followers as a “friend” so they can earn their trust and use it on their benefit later. Let’s explain it this way… When a business starts, we see just a company that doesn’t share value, rather just taking our money and giving something back. We are less likely to have an emotional “connection” when it comes to a company, it can be nostalgia but not too deep. But when it comes to an online personality or influencer… it gets interesting. We focus too much on how many followers and their income is but we TOTALLY ignore the value that they are supposed to offer.

Let's take a look on the definition of manipulative strategy in advertising: "The manipulative advertising intends to do that by using facts, arguments and playing with consumers emotions in a misleading and deceptive manner. The most claims used in manipulation through advertising are the exaggeration of the quality of product, fallacious arguments and emotional appeals."

Those personalities, famous or not, use the influence and perspective distortion. What is perspective distortion? This is when a person just shows you what they want you to see for their benefit. This is also interpreted as manipulation. On my last blog I talked about Neurolinguistic Programming, which means "the negotiator looks for new ways to see with other eyes the person in front of him. He wants to see what the other person looks like to himself, but he also wants to see how the other person would like to see (ego) and wants to see what his strengths and weaknesses are to take advantage of it.” Which means, manipulating a perspective, changing a personality to fit in and engage people to their media. On my next blog I will explain in depth about a manipulative strategies book  and those that are commonly used in advertising.

"Hidden Persuasion: 33 Psychological Influence Techniques in Advertising by psychologist, art director and designer Marc Andrews and social psychologists Dr. Matthijs van Leeuwen and Prof. Dr. Rick van Baaren"

Another example would be when someone likes and comments someone's post all the time, they usually expect the same from you. Why? not because there is appreciation and that they love your content. You are giving them traffic. Giving attention is traffic, doesn't matter who the person is, they all want the same thing. Not friendship, POTENTIAL "trust chained" buyers. There may be other content creators who aren't like this, I am not talking about everyone but from what I’ve experienced on social media platforms. When a regular store or general business sells things, people have no emotions involved right? Because companies aren’t perceived as a person. It just looks like they’re giving money to a company and getting something back. But when you buy from a personality or creator, that worked and built an attraction strategy on you, which is called "treat", people don't perceive it as “I'm buying", it is rather “I'm supporting this person because of how this person is” or “this person is great” or that’s what they appear to be. Why? because the intentions of selling were never implicit to the followers, that is when the strategy is successful. Because the follower was never aware that they had a consumer tag! Some authors perceive this technique as manipulative, since they influence you on treating as a friend so you can purchase from them but there is no sincere interaction. This is really easy to identify, most of perspective alterations comes from those who are too active on your comments and always complimenting you, to the point that it sounds too good to be real. They pretend to show interest in you, but they want attention in return. Without their followers there is no traffic, no cash inflow, no status.

This is seen in many marketing campaigns as well. When you have a membership, they have all you data on their archive, so when it is your birthday and they send an automated message with a gift code. Some people believe that the brand thinks and appreciate them, but that is just a way of keeping them close, making you feel special about it, when they do and say the same to everyone.

The best way for you to identify fake charisma and manipulative strategy is by their social media behavior interactions. Is this person too kind until it looks sketchy? Is this person complimenting you too much and telling others the same thing?. All behaviors are noticeable. Be aware of your social media people. Don’t fall into that strategy, stand your ground and keep going. They know their followers who trust them will buy without asking for it.
